Processing and Peer review
The Brazilian Journal of Biosystems Engineering (BIOENG) is committed to rigorous editorial and ethical standards. All submitted manuscripts undergo a structured review and processing workflow to ensure scientific quality, originality, and integrity. The entire editorial workflow is managed through the journal’s submission platform, and authors must comply with the Guidelines for Authors before submission.
1. Initial Evaluation and Scope Check
Upon submission, the Editor-in-Chief assesses whether the manuscript aligns with the journal’s focus and scope. Manuscripts outside the scope or unsuitable may be rejected at this stage, and the corresponding author is promptly notified.
Submissions that pass the initial check proceed to technical review, where the Editorial Office verifies compliance with the journal’s submission guidelines, formatting requirements, and conducts plagiarism screening using Turnitin® software. Manuscripts with excessive similarity or format nonconformance may be returned for revision or rejected.
2. Double-Blind Peer Review
Manuscripts that meet all initial criteria are assigned to an Associate Editor, who selects at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the subject. BIOENG follows a double-blind peer review model: both authors and reviewers remain anonymous during the evaluation process.
Reviewers assess the manuscript’s originality, methodology, clarity, ethical standards, and contribution to the field. After receiving evaluations, the Associate Editor issues a decision:
-
Accept
-
Minor or major revision
-
Reject
In case of conflicting reviews, a third reviewer may be consulted.
3. Author Revisions
If revisions are requested, the corresponding author must submit a revised manuscript within 30 days, along with:
-
A response letter detailing how each reviewer’s comment was addressed;
-
A marked version of the manuscript showing all changes.
Failure to meet the deadline may result in the closure of the submission. The revised manuscript may undergo a second round of peer review at the discretion of the Associate Editor.
4. Final Decision and Production
Once accepted, the manuscript enters the production phase, which includes:
-
Final plagiarism screening;
-
Ethical compliance check (in accordance with our Ethics and Publishing Practices);
-
Typesetting and layout formatting;
-
Language editing and proofreading.
The authors will receive the proof version and must confirm approval or request corrections within a specified time frame. Only after receiving final confirmation will the article proceed to publication.
5. Publication and Post-Publication
The final article is assigned a DOI and published under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0), ensuring immediate and permanent open access.
If any post-publication issues or errors are identified, the corresponding author must contact the Editorial Office within three (3) days of publication for possible correction.
